THE MOST DILIGENT, THE MOST SERIOUS, THE QUIETEST, THE BEST STUDENT -- whatever, you get the picture already -- once broke the chattering in my class by asking me straightforwardly : "sir, are you gay?" thus creating the quietest silence i've ever experienced my whole life (now you should understand that this is the "good" type of student who broke the silence so this is to be expected, it wasn't the "naughty" type of student whose intention is to create a new ruckus)
"deduction from my photos in facebook/twitter/ask/other social media, huh? err... no, i'm not. why?" (i didn't bother stating my sexual orientation being a bi so as to avoid further inquiries)
a naughty student : "so, teach, do you have a girlfriend?"
me : "well... no"
that dam slick student : "oh i see.. you have a boyfriend instead!"
*laughter erupts*
*me just staring at that kid with a poker face*
dalam hati : "well played, kid. well played."

gue : "lha situ enak, jelek; jadi bisa ada alasan buat jomblo. gue?"

or this one maybe : "apabila lu ngejar2 cewe dan tetap ga dapat2 sampai sekarang, positif thinking aja : mungkin jodoh lu cowo =)"

no, well, no; actually, i was just joking. it's just that it would be cool if a case like that were to happen irl, though. still, if anybody's writing a novel with that background story, gimme a call. i'd like to read it.

rant

so i have been pondering about my professional life as a teacher, having been teaching for 3 years already.

it seems to be a growing trend for students to be more and more antisocial and shier -- which spells doom for me.

my boss once said "what's the point of those vocab and grandma if the students are not gonna use them anyway? let them speak and be noisy in your class" -- well, suits me fine. i like talkative and naughty students anyway.
but then,

for the past few months the number of shy students i have had has been increasing and they are really on a roll. now to make matters worse, these type of shy students are not the ones who just stays quiet in class and does whatever exercise their teachers instruct them to. worse. they turn to their cellphone and start texttextextexting. now this seems familiar, where have i seen them before?

oh, yeah! family reunion! or those cases where a bunch of parents eat out in a restaurant with only a single young kid following. pity. to kill the boredom, they give this kid his cellphone. for him to "socialize"
but anyway, who am i to talk? every chinese new year when we go pai cia and my parents start chatting with relatives, i'm left with nothing to do so i turn to my smartphone and start texttextexting as well.

now, trend makes children allthemore antisocial and they're bringing this trend to classes where i teach.
how deep is the shit am i in?

about education - perspective

to those of you going to school, seeking for education.
let me tell you.. what you need is perspective, not knowledge.
you need concept and understanding, not erudition.

why? because you go there to meet and greet the teachers and be exposed to their way of thinking.
you don't need a teacher who just keeps on reading his book. you can read the book by yourself. but what makes a teacher a good teacher is how he understands the subject he teaches, and that is what you want to get from him. know. know how he understands, know what he did when he learned his subject.

that's all there is to it.
